Level, words and tipsFrequently asked questions
Which Spanish book should I start with?
Start with the easiest books on our list: La Edad de Oro, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Heart (Cuore). They have the most familiar vocabulary and short chapters, and with tap-to-translate they work from B1–B2.
How do you measure a book’s level?
We count how much of the text is covered by the 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 most common Spanish words (wordfreq frequency list, character names excluded) and how many words you need to know to understand 95% of it. Dialect, old forms and very long sentences can move a book up; when we adjust a level, the book’s page says why. The level on the cards is the one from which a book is readable with tap-to-translate; each page also gives its level by vocabulary alone.
How long does it take to read a classic in Spanish?
Our books take from about 1 to 44 hours at 150 words a minute. Each book’s page shows its reading time and how many chapters it has.
Where can I read these books in Spanish for free?
All of them are in the public domain and in the free Booklex library, with word translations at a tap.
