How Booklex began
Booklex started in 2024 with a very ordinary problem. I was learning English and wanted to read real books in English, not textbook dialogues. But every few lines I met a word I did not know. I had to stop, open a dictionary, type the word, read the translation and find my place again.
After a page or two the story was gone. Reading turned into work, and the pleasure that makes you open a book in the first place disappeared. I kept thinking: what if the translation were simply there, right under my finger, the moment I needed it?
That question became Booklex: an app where you read the book you want, tap any word you do not know and keep reading. Nothing pulls you out of the story.
What Booklex is for
I believe learning changes lives. A new language opens new books, new people, new work and new ways of seeing the world. Every new thing we learn makes us a little stronger and a little freer.
The goal of Booklex is to make that learning easier and more joyful, so that people can grow faster, understand more and become better at what matters to them. If Booklex helps someone finish their first book in a foreign language, or understand a text that used to feel impossible, it is doing its job.
Booklex is built around one idea: learning should feel like reading a good book, not like doing homework.
How Booklex works
Everything in Booklex is designed to keep you inside the book while you learn:
- Your books and a free library. Open your own EPUB or PDF files, or start with classic books and graded articles from A1 to C2 in the Booklex library.
- Translation at a tap. Tap any word to see its translation, meaning and pronunciation in context. Booklex also understands phrases and idioms, not only single words.
- Your own dictionary. Save the words you meet to the word list of the book where you found them.
- Spaced repetition. Saved words come back after 1, 3, 7 and 21 days in short games, so they move into long-term memory.
- More than 50 languages. Read and translate in many languages, also offline.
If you want to know why reading works so well for vocabulary, read our guide to learning words through reading and the guide to spaced repetition.
Who makes Booklex
Booklex is created and developed by Pavlo Shumovskyi, an independent developer who started it while learning English himself. Every feature starts from a real situation while reading: a word that would not make sense, a phrase that needed context, a word that would not stay in memory.
Booklex keeps growing thanks to its readers. Their messages, ideas and reviews shape what comes next. If you have an idea for Booklex, you are always welcome to write.
